The wisdom of God that we seek and long to live by has been around forever. When you think about the wisdom made available to you, do you relate it to the wisdom required for the creation of the world? The book of Proverbs gives us insight into this creational wisdom.
The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. Proverbs 3:19-20 ESV
Wisdom was an integral part of creation. The wisdom of God is one with His understanding and knowledge. True wisdom cannot be found without understanding of what is needed in a specific situation. God understood what needed to be done to create a universe and home for mankind, and His wisdom brought it together. Ultimate in knowledge, God created. His wisdom made it good.
The details of wisdom’s creative act
Another passage in Proverbs provides further insight into the wisdom God possessed as He began the creative process for our benefit.
“The Lord possessed me [that is wisdom] at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old.
Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth, before he had made the earth with its fields, or the first of the dust of the world. When he established the heavens, I was here; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the children of man. (Proverbs 8:22-31)
Wisdom preceded creation, and wisdom will be a part of the recreated heavens and earth. Wisdom here is part of the boundaries of the heavens, the depth and borders given to the seas. Wisdom marks the foundations of the earth, showing us that God delighted in His craft and rejoiced in all He created, including the children of man.
This concept of wisdom being the source of order and boundaries is a reminder that this is where we see wisdom in our lives. The wisdom God gives us helps us to grow in self-control and live with integrity. We have ordered lives for a purpose. Our God is a God of order, and as we live wisely, orderly lives, we serve as a reflection of His work in us.
When you visit a beach, look at the stars, or simply consider the wonders of creation, give thanks to the Lord for His wisdom that brought it all together in beautiful order for our good and to our enjoyment.
Grace and Peace
