My theme song

When I say the phrase “theme song,” what comes to mind? Maybe the tune to your favorite TV show or movie, or the song that is shared by you and your spouse? A theme song is like a brand — it defines and brings recognition to something or someone.

The great songwriter David wrote in the psalms, “From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly.”*

Where does your theme song come from? Is it from God or the world? If someone identified you with a song, would be it be one that honored the One you claim to serve or does it better reflect the way you live?

It’s not too late to change your tune.

Though I made a decision to follow Jesus at the young age of eight, there were several years in my life that did not reflect that commitment. I tried playing both sides of the fence, but it only made my song full of missed notes and dissonant sounds. Even scientists say that dissonant music has a natural bad reaction from a person’s brain.

Just as music hurts our brains, sin hurts our bodies and souls; it messes up our relationship with God. Thankfully, I found forgiveness and restoration.

Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.”
And you forgave the guilt of my sin.*

The psalms best describe the change that happened:

He brought me up out of the mud and dirt. He set my feet on a rock.
He gave me a firm place to stand on. He gave me a new song to sing.
It is a hymn of praise to our God.*

The gift of song is one of the greatest things about being a Christian. No other religion or philosophy puts a song in the heart of man. When all is well in our relationship with Christ, the song naturally comes out, and it is pleasant to the ear, not because of my voice, but because of its source of praise.

Is God the theme of your song today? Don’t let the world change your tune. Start singing his praise for all the world to hear.

Grace and Peace
