I’d never heard the phrase before, but it was perfect — “In it to win it!”
No, I wasn’t watching a movie or game show. I was studying the Bible, of all things, with some youth in my church. This is a new class for me, but I’m having fun with the two or three that show up, because God is at work in my life and in theirs.
We were studying something that’s easy to say, but hard to do: Putting Christ First.
Our verse for the lesson came from Matthew 6:33.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Putting Christ first means we need to do several things on a daily basis:
- Trust in him
- Do good
- Delight in him
- Commit my ways to him
- Listen to him
- Obey him
We can only do these things if we are IN his Word. Just like Paul told his young disciple, Timothy:
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God [you and me included] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
That’s when young disciple, Mark said: “You’ve got to be in it, to win it!”
Wow, yes, he got the point! We have to be in God’s Word, not just on Sunday’s, but every day, in order to win the race to which he’s called us in Christ Jesus.
A simple lesson. A great application. To the Glory of God.
So, I ask myself: “Am I in God’s Word to win the race? Do I see the reading, hearing, studying and meditating of this book crucial to my daily life? Am I applying what I read and hear to grow in my walk with Jesus and better share my faith in him with others?
Am I in it to win it? Are you?

Putting Christ first or seek first his kingdom, this is hard stuff, probably cause we compartmentalize everything. Not sure. Good stuff to be thinking about.
