The ring on the chain

We’ve made the list and checked it more than twice. Nothing can get forgotten, since the wedding is not here but there. My eldest son is getting married. I’m the mother of the groom.

So, here he was on a video call asking me what he’d forgotten, as if I would know what he’d need more than the usual things a mother remembers. It was his GoPro he was upset about; he couldn’t find it. As I walked him through why he didn’t need to over pack, he suddenly found the camera. “Oh, there it is,” he said, happy to add one more thing to his stuffed luggage.

He showed up at my house an hour later with the luggage for me to carry in my car. He and his brother were flying up later, and he was so proud that he was carrying nothing with him on the plane. However, that did not mean he didn’t have to check my luggage…after all, I was bringing the rings.

I pointed to the box in my bag: “There they are.”

“Let me see them,” he said. I hesitantly opened the box. “What’s that?” he asked, pointing to a third ring.

“I thought you might want to wear Dad’s during the service on another finger,” I suggested.

“Let me see it.” He rolled it in his fingers and looked inside. “Carol 5-12-1990” it read. “Is that so he wouldn’t forget your name?” He smiled. “That’s sweet.”

I thought of the name that was still engraved on the one I continued to wear. He tried the ring on different fingers. Nothing looked quite right. I noticed his gold chain with his cross around his neck. “What about if you wear it on your chain?” I asked.

“Good idea,” as he took off his chain to add the ring.

“Don’t you want to wait until you get there?” I questioned, hesitant to let the ring far from my sight.

“No, I want to wear it now.”

I let it go. After all, I’m letting him go too. “I can’t believe you’re getting married,” I said as I looked at us in my dresser mirror.

“Me either.” His arm went around my shoulder, and he pulled me tight. “I love you mom.”

“I love you too, habibi.”

More was said, but it doesn’t matter. The important words had been spoken. The ring is in good hands.

Grace and Peace

  1. Carol, I know the wedding will be beautiful. I will be thinking of you as I am sure your heart will be full of many emotions. David had a wonderful model of a Christian home and a marriage with Christ the center. You and Raouf did a wonderful job. Blessings for a wonderful weekend my friend.

  2. Congratulations on the marriage of your son! Many thanks for your great writings that are uplifting, encouraging and touching!
